RESIDENTS OF CLAREMONT TOWERS CAN ENJOY LOTS OF NEARBY SUMMER FUN
Summer has long been the most popular season of the year for both adults and children. Students love summer as school is no longer in session, and they can pass the lazy days away by playing video games, hanging out with friends, or just sleeping in. Adults look forward to summer as it’s the traditional time of year for the family vacation, and the warm weather is perfect for going to the beach, having cookouts in the backyard, or relaxing by the pool. There’s always lots of fun activities that people can enjoy during the summer, and the residents of Claremont Towers in Hillsborough, New Jersey, are quite fortunate that so many can be found close to the luxury apartment complex.
One of the issues that many parents face during summer is finding things for their children to do. The township of Hillsborough has an overall population of 39,378 individuals. Of that number, a full 20.1% (7,909) are under the age of 15. (1) Fortunately for parents living at Claremont Towers, there are a good number of summer camps for their children to attend. The All Children’s Theatre has summer day camp programs that last from one to two weeks throughout the season. Children can learn about acting, dancing, comedy, scene design, and more while putting on public performances. Over the years, All Children’s Theatre has put on over 500 productions with nearly 12,000 children from throughout the region. (2) Another theater-based summer camp is Taubenslag Productions, which helps children become immersed in the world of musical theater. This group is celebrating its 28th year at Middlesex County College and hosts multiple camp sessions for children between first grade and 16 years of age. If one’s children are into sports, the US Sports Institute has over 300 locations in New Jersey and hosts summer sports camps for both boys and girls between the ages of 2 and 19. (3) Children can elect to go to camps that specialize in single sports (basketball, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, t-ball, etc.) or attend a camp where the sports will change on a daily basis.
Children can also enjoy some free movies during the summer as well. Bow Tie Cinemas is offering free showings on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the season. The free movies are at 10am, and this program lasts through August 20th. (4) Parents living at Claremont Towers can take their children to the Mansfield Cinema 14 in Hackettstown and see the following free movies: Mr. Peabody and Sherman, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, Rio 2, and Ice Age: Continental Drift. The entire family can also enjoy free movies held at several outdoor locations. Dunham Park in Basking Ridge is showing movies like Finding Dory and Beauty and the Beast on Wednesday nights while Duke Island Park in Bridgewater is showing Trolls on July 21st and The Boss Baby on July 28th. All films are slated to begin at 8:30pm. (5)
Summer also means some fun festivals and events for people to enjoy. Those living at Claremont Towers can attend the colorful QuickChek New Jersey Festival of Ballooning. This event is the largest summertime hot air balloon and music festival in North America. Held from July 28th through July 30th at the Solberg Airport in Whitehouse Station, the QuickChek New Jersey Festival of Ballooning features two daily ascensions of up to a hundred special hot air balloons, not to mention fireworks, crafts, concerts, family-friendly entertainment, amusement park rides, and more. The festival has been cited as a Top 100 Festival in North America by the American Bus Association six times. (6) Some of the musical acts performing this year include George Thorogood and Pat Benatar. Another fun event is Guelaguetza, a festival in New Brunswick that features the food, music, heritage, healing traditions, and cultural dances of Oaxaca, Mexico. Guelaguetza takes place on July 23rd at Elmer B. Boyd Park. (7) Locals and visitors alike can enjoy the colorful pageantry and delicious food found at this event as they immerse themselves into another culture.
Cheryl Chambers of Claremont Towers says, “Summer is definitely my favorite season of the year as there’s nothing like lounging by the pool while friends or family are grilling some food. Of course, one of the main facets of summer is that there’s no school, but parents living at Claremont Towers have a pretty wide range of options available to them. There are quite a few summer camps, such as All Children’s Theatre and the sports camps held by the US Sports Institute, where children can burn off their excess energy and have something to do during the day. There are outdoor free movies that the entire family can enjoy in the evening. Personally, I always look forward to the QuickChek New Jersey Festival of Ballooning. It’s breathtaking to see so many colorful balloons ascend into the sky, not to mention all the other fun activities that the festival offers. If that wasn’t enough, there are plenty of parks that offer natural recreation, such as hiking trails and open fields for flying kites or playing soccer. If you want to cool off and beat the heat, there are a number of water parks that can be found close by, such as Runaway Rapids Family Waterpark and Crystal Springs Family Waterpark. Each park features slides, pools, a lazy river, and areas designed for young children.” (8)
