The holiday season is in full swing, beginning as soon as the turkey dinner on Thanksgiving was over. Black Friday and Cyber Monday kicked off the start of the shopping frenzy that accompanies every Christmas season. Online sales for Cyber Monday alone in 2014 brought in an eye-watering $3 billion in total revenue. (1) In fact, the average person spent $830 on Christmas gifts in 2015. (2) Mixed in with all the last minute shopping excursions and gift wrapping are other seasonal events, such as holiday-themed plays and ceremonies. Residents of Claremont Towers, the luxurious apartment complex in Hillsborough, New Jersey, find themselves fortunate to have so many such events in close proximity.

Hillsborough, New Jersey, still manages to retain a quaint small town charm despite having a population of 38,303 individuals. This charming atmosphere has enabled the township to be listed as the 16th Best Place to Live by Money magazine in 2013. (3) The holiday season is always eagerly looked forward to every year by the local inhabitants, both young and old alike. Not only do many businesses and residences decorate for the holidays, but there are plenty of activities to enjoy as well. One holiday event that many residents of Claremont Towers are looking forward to is The New Jersey Youth Ballet's Nutcracker 2016. This performance will be fully narrated and has been abridged so that younger children don't become restless. All of the performers are talented children and teens. This ballet is being held at the Kelsey Theatre at Mercer County Community College on December 10th, 11th, and the 16th. For some beautiful choral music, one should attend the Sing Gloria concert being held on December 11th at the Hillsborough Reformed Church. Parents can take their children to see Santa as he flies into the Central Jersey Regional Airport on December 11th at noon. This event is being held in a large indoor hangar, and children can have their picture taken with jolly old Saint Nick. (4)

The State Theatre New Jersey in nearby New Brunswick has a full slate of holiday offerings to enjoy. Many of those living at Claremont Towers already have tickets to see the incomparable Manheim Steamroller perform on December 10th. Manheim Steamroller has been a Christmas staple for over thirty years as their multimedia concerts have thrilled millions of people. A special presentation of The Nutcracker will be performed for children in grades 4-12 on December 16th by the American Repertory Ballet. A full staging of the holiday classic that features a live orchestra and choir will be performed from December 16th through the 18th. To get into the proper festive spirit, the Glen Burtnik's Xmas concert features talented performers from across New Jersey playing many holiday favorites on December 23rd. The final event of the holiday season for the State Theatre New Jersey is a staging of the iconic Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat from December 28th through the 30th. To show one's holiday spirit of generosity, the State Theatre New Jersey is accepting donations of non-perishable food items, children's diapers, and adult's and children's winter coats and accessories through December 18th. It seems that everyone is filled with Christmas cheer that not even long lines at the stores can diminish. We're quite lucky that there's a plethora of holiday-themed events that can be found close by our building. I know that quite a few of our residents are seeing The Nutcracker, but I'm really looking forward to Manheim Steamroller bringing their holiday magic this year.
