A New Year Brings Seasonal Fun for Residents of Claremont Towers

The cold weather is no deterrent for residents of Claremont Towers to enjoy themselves

A new year brings the promise of a fresh start and a renewed sense of optimism for the future for many people. However, there can also a feeling of being let down as the holiday season has ended. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve may be in the rear-view mirror, but that doesn’t mean the fun has to end. Fortunately for residents of Claremont Towers in Hillsborough, New Jersey, there are many enjoyable activities to be found nearby.

The township of Hillsborough, New Jersey, has an estimated population of 39,832 individuals. (1) While small in size, the township does feature close proximity to a number of locations that boast some worthwhile sights and events to experience. Both Princeton and Rutgers Universities are located only 20 minutes away from Claremont Towers, and there is easy access to both New York City and Philadelphia via trains.

Those living at Claremont Towers know that the Hillsborough Parks and Recreation Department always has a full slate of fun activities, and the early winter months of 2019 is no exception. For children, there are various sports-related activities to keep them active, such as programs in tennis, basketball, swimming, and yoga. Children can learn basic culinary skills in the Little Chefs workshops held throughout January and February. (2) A fascinating workshop has young people learning the history and mechanics of amusement park rides, and students will learn about mathematical concepts as they construct rides like the Tilt-a-Whirl and Swing boat ride. Adult men can partake of basketball and volleyball programs, and the department is also hosting co-ed volleyball and exercise programs.

A popular destination during the winter months is Duke Farms. This beautiful location boasts 1000 acres of pristine natural wonder where one can learn about local flora and fauna, sustainability, and preservation. (3) Duke Farms is a great place for residents of Claremont Towers to partake of some snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. A surprising activity is geocaching, which can be quite enjoyable during the crisp weather of winter. There are also plenty of trails for hiking at Duke Farms, not to mention at the numerous municipal parks within Hillsborough.

Just a short drive from Claremont Towers are the communities of Lambertville and New Hope, site of the Lambertville New Hope Winter Festival from January 19th through January 27th. (4) Children will enjoy the puppet shows and the live theater experience of the Snow Queen’s Frozen Adventure. Lovers of history will enjoy the walking tours of both Lambertville and New Hope, not to mention tours of the Marshall House, the boyhood home of the discoverer of gold in California. The cold month of January is the perfect time to enjoy the Soup-a-Thon contest at the festival as local restaurants offer their best mouth-watering soups for people to enjoy on a cold day. Other popular activities at the festival include the creation and/or viewing of SnowFolk Art and the live demonstrations of ice sculpting.

Cheryl Chambers of Claremont Towers says, “It’s amazing to think about how many activities that there are to do during the winter months at the start of 2019. There are plenty of trails to hike upon in the township’s seven parks, not to mention a hockey rink and places to enjoy cross-country skiing. The Parks and Recreation department also features a lot of activities for children and adults. Of course, there are a number of places to ice skate as well as go ice fishing. The Lambertville and New Hope Winter Festival is always a popular destination for those living at Claremont Towers. Personally, I enjoy watching the ice sculptures being created, which I then follow by eating some hearty, warm soup at one of the restaurants participating in the Soup-a-Thon. The Somerset County Library System has a lot of things for people of all ages to do during this time. There are storybook reading sessions for toddlers, chess clubs, movies, and board and role-playing game sessions. The start of 2019 offers a lot of opportunities for fun, whether you enjoy snowshoeing in the great outdoors at Duke Farms or preferring to stay indoors and play some basketball in a league.” (5)
